Cities Near the Afghanistan Earthquake Epicenter to Avoid

On 31 August 2025, a magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck the Nurgal District of Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan. The epicenter was recorded at coordinates 34.706° N, 70.793° E, and the tremor caused widespread devastation across nearby regions. For travelers, it is strongly advised to avoid visiting certain cities that lie dangerously close to the earthquake’s center.

    1. Asadabad (Kunar Province)

Asadabad, the capital of Kunar Province, lies only about 37 kilometers east-northeast of the epicenter. The city and its surrounding villages have suffered significant structural damage, making it one of the highest-risk areas for visitors.

    2. Jalalabad (Nangarhar Province)

Jalalabad, a major hub in Nangarhar Province, is located roughly 27 kilometers east of the earthquake’s center. Already vulnerable due to its dense population and older infrastructure, the quake has further increased risks for travelers.

    3. Mihtarlam (Laghman Province)

The city of Mihtarlam, also known as Mehtar Lam, sits about 35 kilometers northwest of Jalalabad, placing it close to the seismic zone. It has experienced tremors and remains at risk of aftershocks and infrastructure instability.

    4. Khogyani District (Nangarhar Province)

Although smaller and more rural, the Khogyani area near Jalalabad has been heavily affected. Many villages here lie close to the epicenter and have reported severe damage, making them unsafe for travel.

    5. Surrounding Rural Communities

Beyond the main cities, numerous smaller towns and villages in Kunar and Nangarhar Provinces lie within the vulnerable zone. These areas have seen entire communities flattened, with limited rescue access due to blocked roads and landslides.

    Final Note

Given the proximity of these cities and districts to the earthquake’s epicenter, travel to these regions is not recommended at this time. Safety concerns include damaged infrastructure, unstable buildings, limited medical facilities, and the risk of strong aftershocks.
